St Joe purchased the land we call WaterColor back in 1927 for $11 per acre.
When designing the property, St Joe worked with a team of environmentalists to embrace open spaces, nature, and the coastal dune lake. The homes are set back off the lake, with native landscaping and retention ponds helping filter any run off, before it eventually goes into the lake. They’ve turned the storm water retention areas into great places to watch the fish and birds, from wooden benches and platforms. Running trails bordering the lake, open the lake views up to all, and you never have to run the same loop twice.
From the pavilions built on the lake, and the foot bridges across the lake, you can really enjoy the serenity of it all, without getting your feet wet. However, for anyone wanting to be more adventurous, you can rent a Stand Up Paddleboard (aka- SUP) from the WaterColor BoatHouse, and their water partner, YOLO Board Adventures. Not feeling too adventurous? Watch SUP paddlers from the bridge at WaterColor BoatHouse.
WaterColor homes are based on the Florida vernacular architecture of Southern wood homes with features that include large wraparound or screened porches, wood columns and siding and a metal roof with deep overhangs. Today’s designs are created by trained architects, but traditionally, the designs relied on the design skills and tradition of local builders. You will find homes in small southern towns like Eufaula AL being part of the influence for the styles you see in find in today’s modern designs.
Community amenities include swimming pools, fitness center, tennis courts, parks and gardens, shopping and restaurants. Camp Creek Golf Club is available to homeowners for an annual fee.
One of the first things built in WaterColor was the WaterColor Inn, a 60 room beachfront resort designed by David Rockwell. In 2006 it was rated the #1 Family Friendly Resort in North America by Travel + Leisure magazine. It is the only four diamond hotel in Northwest Florida. Completion of the Inn was given a priority, so that people could come experience the vision of WaterColor first hand, and stay the night. Today, the Inn is often filled to capacity, as it remains a big attraction being that it is beachfront.
